Kudu is a comprehensive ERP and business management suite built by flooring professionals for flooring professionals. Designed to streamline operations across sales, scheduling, inventory, and accounting, it offers a centralized, scalable solution that grows with its users—from small businesses to large enterprises.
After testing the waters with an open-source solution, the Kudu team realized they needed full product control to serve their long-term vision and meet the demands of enterprise clients. That’s when they partnered with Dualboot to build the real deal.
The opportunity
After launching with a white-labeled open-source ERP, the Kudu team quickly discovered the limitations of a product they didn’t fully own or control. While the approach enabled a fast go-to-market, it became clear that this foundation couldn’t support their long-term vision.
Kudu’s leadership—drawing from over a decade of firsthand experience running flooring businesses—understood the industry’s unique needs. But their existing platform couldn’t deliver:
- A rigid architecture made it nearly impossible to tailor workflows to the nuances of the flooring industry.
- IP constraints limited investment in innovation and made it hard to stand out in a crowded ERP market.
- Performance and scalability issues emerged as they began onboarding larger clients generating $100M+ in revenue.
- A subpar UX/UI experience failed to meet modern expectations from professionals managing complex retail operations.
To unlock the next phase of growth, Kudu needed to rethink everything. The goal: a fully owned, intuitive, and scalable ERP platform purpose-built for flooring professionals.
The solution
Kudu partnered with Dualboot to bring their vision to life—starting from the ground up. Together, we set out to design and build a proprietary ERP platform that would solve immediate operational challenges while laying the groundwork for long-term scalability.
We embedded a cross-functional team spanning design, engineering, product, and QA, collaborating with Kudu from discovery to delivery. From the outset, we followed a design-first approach—scoping, validating, and user-testing each module before writing a single line of code—ensuring the platform was functional, intuitive, and tailored for flooring retail operations.
Key elements of our approach included:
-
Industry-specific architecture with workflows for project scheduling, inventory management, and accounting.
-
Multi-tenant SaaS infrastructure for secure data separation and centralized updates.
-
Continuous delivery cycles, allowing Kudu to test and iterate rapidly.
-
Alignment with AWS best practices for security, flexibility, and reliability.
Early in the process, persona-driven workshops gave us insights from both frontline staff and back-office users. Development began with the most complex operational area—Sales—and expanded into Scheduling, Inventory, and Accounting. Using bi-weekly sprints, we alternated between interactive Figma prototypes and live code, enabling fast validation and quick pivots.
What started as a replatforming initiative evolved into a full-scale product transformation. The final ERP solution featured:
-
Customizable business settings and real-time data flows.
-
Advanced reporting and admin tools for operational visibility.
-
Stable DevOps environments and UAT cycles to ensure every feature was launch-ready.
Throughout the process, adaptability remained our constant—refining workflows based on feedback and delivering exactly what was needed, when it was needed, to bring a powerful, fully owned ERP to market.
“Dualboot worked with us like a true partner—helping us grow while bringing new ideas and expertise we didn’t know we needed.”
